Hayfever Remedies & Liver Support This Spring Equinox

How are you? I’ve been enjoying dog walks and soaking up the magic of Spring while working with new patients and meeting new yogis in class.

There is a general feeling of newness, possibility, light, warmth, with a momentary frost to remind us that Nature moves in waves; forwards and backwards, it’s a gentle ebb and flow and as much as we want to rush around we can also be mindful with the same gentle ebb and flow in our movements and thoughts.

As we move from March and head into April we connect with the Astrological Star sign Aries, whose tissue salt is Kali Phos, Potassium Phosphate. So take heed and pace yourself, feed your body nourishing food and hydrate as you’ll need your energy as we also begin to gather momentum moving into our glorious Spring.

With the sprouting of buds this month brings hayfever symptoms for those with a tree pollen allergy. Homeopathy is an excellent option for hayfever symptoms as we can prescribe a bespoke prescription to tackle the root cause and symptoms which can be any or all of the following such as runny nose, itchy eyes, itchy palate of the mouth, wheezing, sneezing, congestion. Imagine treating your hayfever so it goes away, forever - that is possible using homeopathic medicine and treating the root cause. Check out some remedies for Hayfever in this month’s newsletter.

Spring is the season of the Liver, our largest internal organ. I share some amazing facts about this organ, its actions and some medicinal mushrooms to support our liver. Next month I’ll list some homeopathic remedies to support it.

As always please do get in touch with any questions about Homeopathy or yoga and I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Have a wonderful Spring Equinox basking in the light and I look forward to connecting with you again in April.

Until then, here's to your good health,

Itchy eyes? Runny Nose? Could it be Hayfever?

We all experience hayfever differently so finding the root cause is essential to curing this seasonal allergy. The trees are bursting open their buds and pollen is in the air.  I used to have hayfever symptoms from tree pollen but it went when I started practising yoga regularly, I found it massively helped especially doing back bend postures. Now I notice it less and less. Magnesium is also helpful to take as it makes diamine oxidase,  an enzyme that helps the body to eliminate excess histamine in food, some food types contain histamine and are best avoided, I'll list those in next month's newsletter. It is helpful to begin taking homeopathy beforeyour allergy symptoms kick in, so I would recommend you to get in touch with me.

Listed below are some remedies I use for my patients presenting with hayfever symptoms, have a read through and see which symptoms resonate with you.

Allium cepa: watery eyes and a clear nasal discharge with sneezing and a tickling cough. Feels worse indoors and when rooms are warm, and better in fresh air.

Apis mellifica: Nasal congestion with stinging pain, improved by cold air.

Arsenicum album: burning, watery, runny nose with a stuffy, tickling feeling during allergy. Swelling below the eyes and a wheezy cough are common.

Euphrasia: This remedy can be helpful if the eyes are swollen and irritated with acrid tears or pus. Symptoms are often worse in the daytime and worse from warmth, and the eyes may hurt from too much light. A daytime cough, which improves at night.

Ferrum phosphoricum: Very useful remedy in the early stages of any inflammation. Taken when allergy symptoms start, it often slows or stops an episode. Runny eyes with a burning or gritty feeling, facial flushing, watery nose, and short, hard, tickling cough.

Gelsemium: tired feeling during allergies with a flushed and heavy-feeling face. A sensation of dryness or of swollen membranes felt inside the nose—or the nose may run with irritating watery discharge, with frequent sneezing. Aching in the back of the head and neck, a trembling feeling, and chills along the spine.

Histaminum: This remedy relieves all symptoms from allergic origin.

Kali iodatum: Burning nasal discharge, especially if there is a feeling of constriction at the base of the nose.

Natrum muriaticum: Relieves runny nose alternating with periods of dryness and stinging in the nasal cavity.

Nux vomica: Hayfever that tends to occur in the early morning, upon awakening, with spasmodic sneezing.

Sabadilla: Long paroxysms of sneezing, itching in the nose with irritating runny discharge, a feeling of a lump in the throat, and watery eyes will all suggest a need for this remedy.

Wyethia: Intolerable itching felt on the roof of the mouth and behind the nose—sometimes extending into the throat and ears. Everything in your head feels dry and irritated, but the nose may still be runny.

Did you know..

Spring is Liver season!

In Chinese medicine, spring is associated with the wood element. It embodies the same energy as sprouts and buds pushing their way to the sun after a long winter of dormancy.

Spring brings new momentum that encourages us to come out of hiding, make plans, take more risks, try new things, and take actionable steps

toward our goals. Embracing this momentum can help support liver energy on both emotional and spiritual levels.

Our liver performs over 500 functions including processing food, detoxifying substances, storing nutrients, and producing bile, and it also has the remarkable ability to regenerate.

Here are 6 facts about the liver, test yourself …

  1. Largest solid organ:
Your liver is large - it generally weighs in at approximately 3 pounds (1.3 to 1.5 kg).

  2. Regeneration:
The liver can regenerate, meaning it can repair itself and grow back if damaged, so hope exists for revival with homeopathy, even if you’ve abused it for years!

  3. Storage:
The liver stores vital nutrients like vitamins (A, D, E, K, B12), minerals (iron, copper), and glucose as glycogen.

  4. Blood clotting:
The liver produces proteins that are essential for blood clotting, helping to stop bleeding.

  5. Hormone production:
The liver plays a role in the production and regulation of hormones, including those that regulate blood sugar and metabolism.

  6. Metabolism:
The liver is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, breaking them down and converting them into usable energy.

What an amazing organ! This month we are highlighting some medicinal mushrooms, below, which have been proven to support the liver and its many processes, I'll talk about liver remedies next month.

Several medicinal mushrooms, including Reishi, Chaga, and Turkey Tail, are known for their potential to support liver health, often through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Keen to know more? Here’s a more detailed look at some of these mushrooms and their potential benefits:

  • Turkey Tail (Coriolus Versicolour) may offer potential benefits for liver health, particularly in the context of certain liver diseases and conditions, due to its polysaccharide content, which has shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, can alleviate NAFLD (non alcoholic fatty liver disease)

  • Royal Sun Agaricus (Agaricus blazei Murill) also known as the ‘mushroom of the sun’, has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting liver health, including normalising liver function and protecting against damage.

  • Shiitake mushrooms show promise in supporting liver health, potentially suppressing liver fibrosis and reducing liver damage. Studies suggest they can promote fat metabolism, reduce triacylglycerol accumulation, and protect against liver damage.

  • Maitake (Grifola frondosa) Traditionally used to support liver health, with compounds that may help protect the liver and promote detoxification.

Mushrooms support the healing process and our organs, they provide probiotic support for our gut microbiome as well as minerals and vitamins we need to heal - they are a powerhouse!

Remember, when taking medicinal mushrooms please work with a practitioner to diagnose the root cause. I work with Hifas da Terra because their provenance is excellent, their testing is thorough, the mushrooms are grown in-house and they are organic. Hifas' products are potent, more so than any others on the market, they also have a range to support people diagnosed with cancer, Mico-Onco, which is super potent and I will talk about that another time.

We have been testing out medicinal mushrooms in my household. From ages 9, 18 and 50 we are all feeling the benefits, so please do get in touch if you would like further information on what to buy. Here is a code to get 10% off any high potency medicinal mushrooms from Hifas Da Terra:

Type '9AMC3' at checkout.
